Funding brief: The Ernest Kleinwort Charitable Trust (EKCT) aims to ‘make a difference’. The trustees will consider all applications that fall within the trust’s area of activity from charities that are registered in the UK.

Grants will be considered for start-up costs, core costs or for a specific project for which applicants have requested support. This could include a contribution towards a building/refurbishment project, purchase of specialist equipment or other similar capital expenditure, or assistance with running costs.

Areas of Grant Support: Principal support is given to charities working in the following areas:
● Charitable work in the County of Sussex
● Wildlife & Environmental Conservation (UK and International)
● Reproductive Health (International) – please note that there are no remaining funds for this category in the financial year 2017 – 2018.

The trustees use the following programme areas to classify their grants:
● Care of the Elderly
● Disability
● General Welfare
● Hospices

Funding limit:
● Small Grants (£5,000 and under): Applications for Small Grants may be made at any time of year using the Small Grants Application Form (See How to Apply). Trustees aim to consider applications and notify applicants within 30 days of receipt of an application form.
● Medium Grants (£5,001 – £10,000): Applications for Medium Grants will be considered four times a year by a small group of trustees, to whom power has been delegated by the Board to make donations up to £10,000. Applications may only be made during certain times of the year and using the Medium Grants Application Form (See How to Apply). Trustees aim to consider applications and notify applicants within 8 – 12 weeks of receipt of an application form.
● Large Grants (£10,001 and over): Applications for Large Grants will be considered by trustees twice a year at full board meeting. Applications may only be made during certain times of the year and using the Large Grants Application Form (See How to Apply). Trustees aim to consider applications and notify applicants within 12 – 15 weeks or receipt of an application form. Large grants are typically agreed upon when the trustees have a deep understanding and/or close relationship with the charity, which may have developed over a period of several years.

Project duration: Trustees are unlikely to support applications for funding for periods longer than 12 months. In very exceptional circumstances they may consider funding for up to a period of three years, at which point they will review whether support should be withdrawn to enable resources to be devoted to other projects.

 Organizations not registered as charities in the UK or those that have been registered for less than a year.
 Pre-school groups.
 Out of school play schemes including pre-school and holiday schemes.
 Charities not funded by any other charity.
 Very small and narrowly specialized activities.
 Local authorities.
 Individuals or charities applying on behalf of individuals.
 General requests for donations.
 Expeditions or overseas travel.
 ‘Campaigning’ organizations.
 Charities whose main aim is to raise funds for other charities with substantial cash reserves.
 Animal rescue or animal welfare organizations.
