Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF): Inviting applications for ‘Biodiversity Information Fund for Asia (BIFA) programme’ for data mobilization and portal support in Asia.

Funding brief: The third call under the Biodiversity Information Fund for Asia (BIFA) programme invites proposals that
● Enhance knowledge of Asian biodiversity through access to data from biological collections and monitoring programmes in the region
● Support GBIF nodes in Asia to develop or improve biodiversity information portals

GBIF invites the submission of proposals under the third phase of the Biodiversity Information Fund for Asia (BIFA) programme, funded by the Ministry of the Environment, Government of Japan.

Three types of grants are included in the call:
● BIFA collections data mobilization grants will target Asia’s natural history collections, to fill taxonomic and geographic gaps in freely-accessible data relating to Asian biodiversity. These grants are open to any institutions based in Asia.
● BIFA ecological monitoring data mobilization grants will target Asian biodiversity monitoring programmes and networks. These grants are open to any institutions based in Asia.
● BIFA portal support grants will target activities by GBIF Participant nodes or groups of nodes in Asia to develop or upgrade national, regional or thematic biodiversity information web portals.

Funding limit: This call for proposals aims to address key challenges that GBIF nodes in Asia have identified in connection with the mobilization and use of biodiversity data in the region. The total potential funding assigned to this call is approximately €105,000, and applicants may request a maximum of €15,000 through BIFA for each project.
● BIFA collections data mobilization grants: A maximum of €15,000 may be requested through a BIFA collections data mobilization grant. All proposals must include co-funding from other sources, either directly or in-kind including staff time. No overheads may be charged to BIFA. Applicants may include data paper publication fees as eligible costs. A maximum of €3,000 may be requested from BIFA for IT services or purchase, covering a maximum of 50% of total cost for these items.
● BIFA ecological data mobilization grants: A maximum of €15,000 may be requested through a BIFA ecological monitoring data mobilization grant. All proposals must include co-funding from other sources, either directly or in-kind including staff time. No overheads may be charged to BIFA. BIFA collections data mobilization grants: The GBIF Secretariat welcomes proposals from natural history collection institutions in any of the countries listed below.
● BIFA ecological data mobilization grants: The GBIF Secretariat welcomes proposals for mobilizing ecological monitoring data from any institution, NGO or network that is a legal entity in any of the countries listed below.
● BIFA portal support grants: BIFA portal support projects may be proposed by one or more GBIF Participant nodes in Asia. Nodes from the following Participants are eligible to submit project proposals:India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Republic of, Chinese Taipei (TaiBIF), ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD). These projects may include partners from from Participant countries outside the Asia region, as mentors or trainers.
● Biodiversity Information Fund for Asia: BIFA programme: BIFA—the Biodiversity Information Fund for Asia—provides supplementary support for existing activities within the GBIF network, addressing the needs of regional researchers and policymakers through mobilization and use of biodiversity data. Activities supported by BIFA will help establish and strengthen national biodiversity information facilities, expand the GBIF network in the region and add to the ability of Asian researchers and decision-makers to access data required for the management of the region’s biodiversity.
