Funding brief: The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) Productivity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (PIE) Program is seeking proposals for research grants in the areas of Innovation Policy, Entrepreneurship and Digitization.

The NBER Productivity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (PIE) Program is seeking proposals for research grants in the areas of Innovation Policy, Entrepreneurship and Digitization.

The Innovation Policy group encourages proposals focusing on a range of issues, including, but not limited to academic technology transfer, the impact of the intellectual property system, scientific and engineering workforce issues, the impact of policy on technological entrepreneurship, antitrust and innovation, and the provision of innovation incentives.

The Entrepreneurship group encourages proposals focusing on a diverse set of policy issues around entrepreneurship and its impact on the economy. Examples are the impact of new funding models for the growth and financing of entrepreneurship, the decision to enter or exit entrepreneurship, the role of start ups in job creation and innovation or implications of labor market and other regulations for the entrepreneurial eco-system.

The Digitization group encourages proposals on topics related to the causes behind the growth of digital technologies and the consequences from their increasing use. These topics include studies of the role of copyright and commons in shaping digital economic activity, the economics of privacy and online security, and how new models of  advertising alters the shape of online activities. Special attention will be given to proposals measuring important aspects of the transition in media markets, organizational change due to increasing digitization, and the role of digitization in innovation, entrepreneurship and productivity.

 Funding limit: Funding is available for eight grants in total:
● 3 grants of $20,000 in the area of Innovation Policy
● 3 grants of $20,000 in the area of Entrepreneurship
● 2 grants of $15,000 in Digitization

Project start date: The grant term in each case will be from July 1, 2017

Project duration: 1 Year (The grant term in each case will be from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018.)

● 
Applicants need not be affiliated with the NBER. Applications are not limited to US residents. Grantees are not expected to be resident at the NBER, and can use the funds for a variety of purchases, including data acquisition and travel related to the research topic. The funds cannot be used for Summer Salary. No indirect costs are allowed.
● Preference will be given to junior scholars whose research focuses on the economics of innovation and/or entrepreneurship. Please note that grants are awarded to individuals and not their institution. Applicants are permitted to apply for more than one of the 3 types of grants being offered.
